Nanaimo's Malaspina University-College has a student-produced paper, the Navigator. It's a great publication for reflecting well the culture of the campus.
There is a great alternative news source online - TheFilter.ca is organized by a former Nanaimoite in Vancouver.
As for the bigger papers, there are essentially two sides to the Nanaimo newspaper scene. The Nanaimo Bulletin, or Nanaimo News Bulletin, is the Black Press paper in Nanaimo, while the Canwest-owned newspapers in town are the Nanaimo Daily News and the Harbour City Star.
